From Pat Benatar to Chris Young: What we’re looking forward to this week

This week, the editors at Northern Virginia Magazine are looking forward to Pat Benatar performing in Alexandria, seeing a country concert in Fairfax, spending time in Fairfax Corner and watching a reboot of ‘Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.’

We are young [again], heartache to heartache
Feb. 5
During a strange month in late 2001—a time when many things were strange—my sister and I drove from Phoenix back to our Tucson college with Pat Benatar on full blast. All you need is the opening a cappella line of “Shadows of the Night” to realize two things: 1) Female-generated rock was at its zenith in the 1980s and 2) Pat Benatar is a beast. Seeing her perform with husband and musical partner Neil Giraldo at the Birchmere this Monday should be just about anyone’s dream realized. –EB

Excited about Losing Sleep
Feb. 9
Friday, my hometown friend of over 15 years will be coming to stay with me for the weekend. Wasting no time, we’re kicking off our Virginia adventures at country artist Chris Young’s EagleBank Arena concert and plan on checking out one (or two or three) of the area’s many wineries/wine bars on Saturday. Cheers to girls weekend! –RK

A chaperoned double date?
I am at the stage in motherhood where both of my boys are venturing out in the socializing realm: One is almost 14 years old and has been hitting up the gym, movies and major social hubs with his friends any chance he can get; and now my 11-year-old-son is taking a cue from the older one and has asked me if he and friends (another boy and two girls) can go to Fairfax Corner to hang out for the day, catch a movie and walk around. Here is where I pause. Is he too young? I don’t think so. Am I overthinking this? Probably. Am I letting him go? Yes. Am I tagging along? Somewhat. If you see a group of four tweens causing trouble, you can come tell me as I’ll be strolling the stores, maybe doing a little spying, and depending on how long they hang, I may even take advantage of the new drink-and-stroll policy. –LN

Queer Eye on Netflix, Feb. 7
I’m not normally a fan of the reboot, in fact, most second comings are pretty terrible. But I am willing to try Queer Eye, an update of the early-2000 Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, which employed five gay men to reignite straight men’s lives via clothes, culture, interior design, grooming and food and drink. Antoni Porowski is the new foodie (follows Chopped host Ted Allen) and I’m particularly interested to see how the way we eat today is reflected on this Atlanta-based makeover show. –SG
