From the Arlington Flea Market to ’90s nostalgia at Wolf Trap: What we’re looking forward to this week

This week, we’re checking off what’s left on our summer bucket lists.

This week, we’re checking off what’s left on our summer bucket lists, including pool time in Alexandria, visiting this month’s flea market in Arlington and hitting up the I Love the ’90s concert with TLC and company at Wolf Trap, plus what we’re watching right now.

Getting every last bit out of summer
Sept. 3

My goals this week are to: 1) have a plan in place for when my kids head back to school, mainly in the food prep department with healthy school lunches and preplanned dinners that up the ante on healthy ingredients and 2) spend every moment possible at the pool catching up on my reading (currently: Gravity Changes by Zach Powers—check out the review in the October issue) and lounging. I’m also getting in one last summer concert with ’90s favorites TLC, Kid N Play and Rob Base at Wolf Trap on Sunday, Sept. 3. –LN // Wolf Trap: 1551 Trap Road, Vienna

Arlington Flea Market
Sept. 2, 7 a.m.-1 p.m.

The time is coming when I’ll be forced to acknowledge that summer is over, so that means I’ve got to maximize the time I have left. Step one: Check off my contribution to the staff summer bucket list by visiting the Arlington Flea Market on Saturday and doing a little retail therapy to ease the transition to a new season. The other priority is ice cream. –WD // Arlington Flea Market: 15th and Stafford streets, Arlington

Giving my credit card some cardio

My soon-to-be kindergartener is also about to start her first real ballet class (the kind where they require those little pink bun covers) at BalletNova. This weekend, we will patronize my favorite dance supply shop, Robcyns, to acquire the endless list of gear. Afterward, we may drown our sorrows over the excessive cost with Thai rolled ice cream from La Moo. –EB // BalletNova: 3443 Carlin Springs Road, Falls Church; Robcyns: 3660 King St., Alexandria; La Moo Creamery: 2501-B N. Old Town Pool and summer reading

It’s the last week of August, and I still haven’t gotten to the pool. I swear, I’m really going this weekend, and maybe I can get my husband to mind our daughter in the kiddie pool so I can finish reading Nora Ephron’s Heartburn, a quick, delicious novel that’s sad and funny. I saw the movie but don’t really remember what happens, and I’m just excited to not be reading another chef memoir. (OK, fine, the protagonist is a cookbook author, but those details are on the periphery.) –SG // Old Town Pool: 1609 Cameron St., Alexandria

Watching The Deuce on HBO

While HBO’s newest series The Deuce doesn’t officially premiere until Sept. 30, the network released the first episode early for streaming this past weekend. The series marks the reunion of showrunner and writer David Simon and George Pelecanos, who previously worked together on (seriously one of the best shows ever) The Wire. In the stead of drug-ridden, corrupt Baltimore, this time the writing team takes on gritty 1970s New York, but the show boasts familiar faces from The Wire, including Method Man and Larry Gilliard Jr., alongside James Franco, Maggie Gyllenhaal and more.
