Sky full of entertainment

While today gets the spotlight with the eclipse (see where to watch right here in NoVA), this weekend is another time I’ll be looking to the skies for a last bit of entertainment before school starts again. In Front Royal, The Virginia Air Show is a family-friendly event that will showcase more than 50 aircraft including warbirds, flying circus, hot air balloons and 100-plus cars at the accompanying car show. Eating all over Northern Virginia
I’m in the final stretch of visiting restaurants for November’s 50 Best Restaurants issue. I’ll also be holed up in coffee shops in between meals, writing up my finds. While I can’t mention exactly where I’ll be supping, here’s where I enjoyed meals last year for a little dinner inspiration. –SG
Football is back
This Saturday, I’ll be tuning in when the college football season kicks off with Oregon State at Colorado State. Do I care about either of those teams? No, but it beats waiting until Labor Day weekend to cheer on my Missouri Tigers in the season opener. –WD
Living my best life circa 2003
Late last week, a couple of bands special to my youth made long-awaited returns. Rainer Maria, an early aughts indie-rock band fronted by a woman in a time and scene where that was noticeably and painfully absent, just put out its first album (it’s self-titled) in a decade. And Brand New, who were of the same music ilk and period, also surprised-released its first album in eight years, Science Fiction, roughly two months before its scheduled arrival. So, for the foreseeable future, you can find me reveling in the sounds of my angsty teenage years. —BK
