In the week ahead, Northern Virginia Magazine’s editors are looking forward to learning about container gardens at Merrifield Garden Center, shopping in Old Town and getting around to spring cleaning.
Amazing Container Gardens
April 1, 10 a.m.
The rule in my house is that I cannot touch a plant. I’m great at keeping my children and pets alive and happy, but as soon as I touch a plant, even with the best intentions, I tend to send it to its grave. This weekend I’m putting the work in to do better, and I’m starting small by attending Merrifield Garden Center’s Amazing Container Gardens seminar. They offer free classes at different locations each Saturday. Here’s hoping I can change my luck. –LN // Merrifield Garden Center Fair Oaks: 12101 Lee Highway, Fairfax
Decorating with houseplants
After reading a few blog posts about plants that purify the air and help you sleep (and after many, many Pinterest searches), I’m inspired to add a little greenery to my living space, so I’ll be hitting up Merrifield Garden Center sometime this week. I’ve got my eyes on the supposedly hard-to-kill snake plant and, if I’m feeling up for a challenge, something that blooms. –WD
Old Town shopping spree
This weekend, my mom and sisters and 4-month-old nephew (!) are coming to visit, and I’m super excited to see them, but I’m also very excited to use it as an excuse to do some shopping in Old Town Alexandria. I have my eyes set on She’s Unique and Acme Mid-Century + Modern. –BK // Old Town Alexandria
Spring cleaning
I’ve been postponing my spring cleaning, but this week I hope to finally organize my closet (likely while catching up on This is Us). Once I’ve got a bag full of items, I’ll be setting it aside for a trip to Current Boutique in Old Town, my go-to for trading my old stuff for other people’s old stuff. It’s my favorite kind of recycling. –EB
