Alamo Drafthouse Cinema hosts Ultimate ’90s One-Hit Wonders Sing-Along.
By Josh Weiner

This Friday, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Ashburn will offer a voyage through time via the crop of one-and-done ’90s acts whose lone hits helped define the decade. Gabriel Ruzin, the venue’s creative manager, offers his insight into this throwback evening.
Can you give a general overview of the event?
The framework of the event is to show two hours of ’80s and ’90s music videos in sing-along format. We will throw in some extra props, like necklaces and inflatable microphones, to add to the fun. We encourage people to dress up—parachute pants are recommended!
Why one-hit wonders?
The ’80s and ’90s are chock-full of hits by bands that showed up once and then disappeared. It’s an interesting sub-genre that is more specific than a general ’80s and ’90s hits act and gets people guessing as to which songs will be included.
What are some particular songs that have gone over well at these events?
We had a Ultimate ’90s One-Hit Wonder event recently and got a big reaction from “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice and “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-a-Lot. “U Can’t Touch This” by MC Hammer and “Jump” by Kris Kross were also well-received.
How would you sum up the appeal of the event?
For people in their late 20s, 30s and 40s, nostalgia is a big factor. Seeing all of these old music videos will remind them of when they were staying up late at night, watching them on MTV and VH1. It will bring them back to when they were younger.
