At one point or another, most people get the urge to explore a little, to go out and see all the world has to offer. Yet the realities of everyday life make this hard to do. That’s where the Life OK Heritage India Festival comes in.
The Star Heritage India Festival has established itself as one of the D.C. area’s most prominent mediums for authentic South Asian culture, art and commerce. Run by Rushhi Entertainment Inc., the festival features live music, cultural performances and nearly 200 local exhibitors and vendors selling authentic Indian products.
“The biggest thing we always say is: This is for the community, by the community,” says Shishir Misra, president of Rushhi. “We don’t really bring any superstars or Bollywood actors. We just rely on community participation.”
Each year over 10,000 people attend, including many South Asian Americans in the area, representing the many cultures from each of the 29 Indian states. Misra sees the festival as a way to expose those unfamiliar with India to this genuine cultural experience.
“I’m a first-generation Indian-American,” Misra says. “But my kids are second-generation. There has to be something that they can experience and feel that puts them back in touch with their culture. Yes, they do watch Bollywood movies, but unless you get a real touch and feel of the community, it’s very difficult to understand and feel it.”
Dance Masti, an Indian dance competition between local school teams, is just one of the many features showcasing the wide-ranging Indian culture, from the Taiwanese drum dance to Filipino bamboo tinkling. This year’s competition will feature a record-setting 550 child dancers.
The festival will also feature market-style booths selling South Asian garments, jewelry and crafts, as well as a uniquely Indian cuisine, giving D.C. area locals a taste of true Indian commerce.
“Our own generation understands India better, and just putting everybody in touch with our roots, that’s the importance of the event,” Misra says.
