Alexandria’s growing independent bookstore scene is about to get a little stranger. Long Dark House, an independent bookstore dedicated to horror, science fiction, and other “strange stories,” is set to open September 1 at 1510 King St., Alexandria.
Founded by lifelong reader Chanthal Harris, the bookstore will feature a selection of horror and sci-fi titles, with sub-genres including Southern gothic and thrillers, Axios reported. The shop will also sell spooky games and gifts and share space with Madame Coco’s Emporium, which sells artisan chocolates.

Aside from selling frightening stories, Long Dark House is designed to be a space for the local community. The bookstore plans to host book clubs, author events, and themed gatherings. The shop is hosting several pop-up events ahead of its opening including, a “Witchy Summer Soiree” and sinister cocktail night.
Horror fans can attend Long Dark House’s preview night on August 30, to browse books, meet fellow readers, and enjoy bites and refreshments. Tickets include a complimentary raffle ticket with the chance to win prizes including a one-year Long Dark Society Membership.
The shop will join a growing wave of genre-focused bookstores that are allowing readers to connect over shared interests. Other examples include Alexandria’s romance-focused Friends to Lovers and The Dark, Unbound, a fantasy, sci-fi, and horror-focused bookstore in the works for Falls Church.
