Find Specialty Books in These 3 New Themed Bookstores in NoVA

Bookstores are back in a big way across the region.

By Maggie Roth August 8, 2025 at 8:29 am

Luckily for literary lovers, NoVA has long had a great selection of bookstores. But lately, some shops have been taking a more focused approach. These three new Northern Virginia bookstores are perfect for the genre-focused reader.

The Dark, Unbound

Love all things fantasy? Falls Church is getting a new bookstore in the space vacated by Dominion Camera. The Dark, Unbound will stock curated used books in genres like fantasy, sci-fi, horror, and speculative fiction. Its owners also emphasize a focus on the metaphysical, with books on topics like spirituality, mind-body connections, tarot cards, and Tantra. Beyond the books, expect retail items in line with those same themes, and community-focused events like drum circles and author talks.
The Dark, Unbound plans for a late July or August opening; check the website for updates. 112 W. Broad St., Falls Church

Friends to Lovers

No matter your favorite trope, you’ll find all the greatest love stories in Alexandria’s romance bookstore. A fire forced its original location to close just days after the grand opening last November, but the store is officially back up and running in a new (and bigger) permanent space on Cameron Street in Old Town. You’ll fall in love with the stories on the shelves and keep coming back for book signings, release parties, and other themed events. 301 Cameron St., Alexandria

Tales & Tails

Fredericksburg is home to a new shop for book- and dog-lovers alike. Browse the shelves for dog-related books and retail items (alongside other genres), then stop by the coffee counter to grab a treat for both you and your pup. There’s a dog-friendly patio just outside, perfect for spending an afternoon with your furry companion. The shop is also partnering with the Fredericksburg SPCA and Old Dominion Humane Society to host dog adoption events and other activities that bring awareness to animals in need of adoption. 1010 Charles St., Fredericksburg
