Dick’s Plans to Replace JCPenney at Springfield Town Center

A Dick’s House of Sport concept could replace the longtime retailer.

A sporting goods retailer is making another move in NoVA. Dick’s Sporting Goods has filed plans in Fairfax County to move into the JCPenney space at Springfield Town Center. After 53 years in business, JCPenney will permanently close at the location on May 24.

Dick’s Sporting Goods is listed as the future occupant on a site plan application, Washington Business Journal reports. The plan seeks to demolish more than 10,000 square feet of the store and add a synthetic turf field and running track.

The plans are similar to other Dick’s House of Sport locations. The concept, which first debuted in 2021, includes traditional retails space plus features like rock-climbing walls, multi-sport practice cages, and golf simulators.

A Dick’s House of Sport is slated to open in 2027 in the former Lord & Talyor space in Tysons Corner Center. The concept also includes a House of Cleats, which expands the offerings of typical Dick’s stores. It offers a wide variety of cleats for multiple sport surfaces.

Dick’s Sporting Goods already operates a location at Springfield Town Center. No opening date for the new store has been announced.
