Springfield Town Center’s retail landscape is losing one of its original anchors. After 53 years, JCPenney will permanently close its Springfield location on May 24.
The department store opened in 1973, when the property operated as Springfield Mall, and remained through the mall’s redevelopment in the early 2010s.
On a historical note, the store was visited by British royals Prince Charles and Princess Diana in 1985, and Diana reportedly purchased an $8 scarf.
Catalyst Brands, the retailer’s parent company, cited lease challenges in announcing the closure. Signs promoting discounts of 20 to 50% off apparel, home goods, and other merchandise are already in place.
“Regretfully, we are unable to continue our current lease terms for this store location and have been unable to find another suitable location in the market,” JCPenney said in an email to the Washington Business Journal. “We are grateful to our dedicated associates and the loyal customers who have shopped at our Springfield, VA, location through the years.”
JCPenney will continue operating in other Virginia locations, including Potomac Mills, Sterling, and Fair Oaks Mall.
