Virginia’s Tax-Free Shopping Weekend Is Here

Save money on school supplies, clothing, appliances, and more

By Mallory Evans July 30, 2025 at 6:00 am

Here is one shopping spree you do not want to miss. You can save some money on school supplies, clothing, appliances, and more during Virginia’s annual 3-day sales tax holiday. Tax-free shopping begins on Friday, August 1, at 12:01 a.m. and ends on Sunday, August 3, at 11:59 p.m.

The sales tax holiday is organized into three categories of qualified items: school supplies and clothing; hurricane and emergency preparedness products; and Energy Star and WaterSense labeled appliances. Other items are exempt if they do not exceed certain price limitations.

You can take advantage of both in-store purchases and online shopping during this holiday, with the ability to save between 5.3 and 7 percent off of your total purchase cost.

School Supplies and Clothing

You can score tax-free purchases for school supplies that cost $20 or less per item. And for clothing and footwear that cost $100 or less per item.

Qualifying school supplies include backpacks, notebooks, stationery, and cleaning supplies. Exceptions to clothing are athletic wear, purses, and accessory items.

See the full list of qualifying school supplies and clothing.

Hurricane and Emergency Preparedness Products

In the event of an emergency or severe weather, stay alert with preparedness tools and appliances. Here’s what qualifies for tax-free shopping:

  • Portable generators that cost $1,000 or less per item
  • Gas-powered chainsaws that cost $350 or less per item
  • Chainsaw accessories that cost $60 or less per item

  • Specified hurricane preparedness items (including flashlights, bottled water, and First Aid Kits) that cost $60 or less per item

See the full list of eligible hurricane and emergency preparedness products.

Energy Star and WaterSense Items

Qualifying products purchased for noncommercial home or personal use that cost $2,500 or less per item and include the Energy Star and WaterSense labels will not be taxed. Refrigerators, ceiling fans, and light bulbs with the Energy Star label are eligible. You can also buy WaterSense products including faucets, showerheads, and landscape irrigation controllers without paying tax.
