If you’re looking to update your hair hue this winter and get ahead of the “new year, new you” saying, we’ve got just the trend for you. Though pastel hair has been happening for some time now thanks celeb hair trend setters like Nicole Richie, Hilary Duff and Katy Perry, it has now taken on a new direction of an even lighter, almost-white shade that is now known as #grannyhair. To confirm that this trend is in fact happening in NoVA, we consulted Nadia Hijazi, master colorist and stylist at Dolce Vita Salon & Spa at Tysons Galleria. “Pastel hair is huge right now—I would say more the gray color,” says Hijazi. But before you pick up the phone to book your next color appointment, consider the following to keep see whether pastel hues might be for you.

Nadia’s color tips
-Keep in mind that the shades last no more than two weeks, and that’s if you’re taking very good care of it. If you’re lucky, you may be able to extend it even further. But they are not meant to be permanent colors, therefore, they fade out pretty quick.
-The good thing about these colors is that once the original color has faded out, you can always play around with different colors without having to pre-lighten the hair every time.
-I would not recommend doing this at home because you have to pre-lighten your hair first, so unless you are a natural dirty blonde, it would be quite difficult. It is possible, but it depends on what type of look you’re going for.
-These colors look great when done professionally. You can have a wild, unnatural color and still look classy and fashionable.
-I would highly recommend to not wash a lot, but when you do, it is absolutely necessary that you rinse with cool water. Cold water helps to seal the color in, keeping it shiny and causing it to not fade as fast.
-Use a dark towel.
-Lots of companies make shampoos or conditioners that have a bit of the color in it to help it last longer. I would recommend using one of those. I know Aveda has some as well as Manic Panic.
-Sometimes stylists charge a small fee just to freshen up the color if a whole entire process is not needed, so it’s good to ask.
