Fairfax County Police Ramp Up Enforcement During ‘Road Shark’ Campaign

The department is also drawing attention to distracted and impaired driving this month.

The Fairfax County Police Department is working to improve road safety this month with several traffic safety initiatives. The Road Shark campaign is targeting speeding as well as distracted, impaired, and aggressive driving.

Road Shark

The first wave of FCPD’s annual Road Shark initiative runs April 20 to April 26. Officers will conduct “focused enforcement efforts in areas where speeding and aggressive driving are known concerns,” FCPD said in a release.

The next waves have not yet been announced, but last year’s campaign included five, one-week-long initiatives throughout the year. FCPD issued nearly 50,000 citations for unsafe driving during the 2025 Road Shark campaign.

Distracted Driving Awareness

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness month. FCPD will participate in a national campaign called U Drive, U Text, U Pay, focused on raising awareness of the dangers of distracted driving.

The most common distractions are cell phone use such as texting, social media, and talking on the phone. Other distractions include navigation system use, eating, drinking, and interacting with passengers.

FCPD will focus enforcement efforts on drivers using mobile devices.

Impaired Driving Initiative

Officers are also raising awareness of impaired driving with the If You Feel Different, You Drive Different campaign.

“Drivers who are impaired place themselves, their passengers, and everyone sharing the roadway at risk. The message is simple: Impairment is impairment, regardless of the substance,” FCPD said. The department encourages drivers to use rideshare services or designate a sober driver.
