The long-awaited Washington & Old Dominion Trail overpass across Sterling Boulevard is finally underway.
Starting this week, construction crews will be clearing trees near the four-lane highway and hiking trail. Other pre-construction activities, including erosion and sediment control work, will also take place over the next few weeks.
This portion of the project is expected to be completed this spring. It will take place between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Throughout the project, drivers should expect to see an increase in traffic, lane shifts, flagging, and other interruptions.
The W&OD overpass, which was approved by the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors in October 2022, is estimated to cost $13.3 million, according to Loudoun Now. Funding sources for the project include general obligation bonds, local tax funding, and cash proffers from developers.
The current intersection of Sterling Boulevard and the trail sees about 2,000 crossings per day. The creation of the new overpass will give the trail’s pedestrians, bike riders, and horseback riders a safer crossing option.
The W&OD Trail will remain open and accessible during construction. The project is expected to be completed by spring 2028.
