Bus Driver on NY-to-DC Route Refuses to Take Passengers to Destination

A viral thread on BlueSky describes the driver unexpectedly heading to Vienna and “driving erratically.”

Passengers on a bus that was supposed to go from New York to Washington, DC, were unexpectedly taken to Vienna, one passenger said in a viral BlueSky thread.

Posts from BlueSky user Musicology Duck describe a ride on a BestBus Monday night. The driver allegedly sped down the highway and refused to take passengers to their planned destination of Union Station.

“I just woke up from a nap and somehow while I was asleep, everyone on the bus has figured out we are not going to the right place,” Musicology Duck wrote. “They switched drivers at a rest stop and the new driver is telling everyone that they’re the ones on the wrong bus??”

The posts say that the driver refused to listen to passengers who told him they were headed in the wrong direction. When passengers called BestBus customer service representatives and put them on speakerphone, the driver “grabs [their phones] and hangs them up.”

The posts also describe the driver “driving really fast.” And that some passengers called the police to alert them of the situation.

“Ok someone called the police but suggested they avoid pulling the bus over bc he’s driving so erratically. We’re passing DC,” one post said.

Musicology Duck reported that the bus arrived in Vienna around 10 p.m. Some passengers attempted to block the bus from leaving, but the driver “got everyone off the bus and drove off” before police could arrive.

According to the posts, BestBus then sent another bus to take passengers from Vienna to Union Station. The user posted a screenshot of a customer service email promising a refund and a voucher for a round-trip travel credit.

BestBus Response

In response to the incident, BestBus sent the following statement:

“We are aware of an overnight incident involving one of our drivers on a recent trip. The experience described on social media does not reflect the standards we expect from our team or the service our passengers deserve.

We have launched an internal investigation and are reviewing all available information, including driver conduct, operational procedures, and trip conditions. While that review is underway, we have taken immediate steps to address customer impact. All affected passengers have received full refunds and a credit voucher for a future trip.

We sincerely regret the disruption and poor service experienced by our passengers. We appreciate their patience as we complete our review, and we are committed to taking appropriate action and implementing any necessary improvements to prevent this from happening again.”
