Snow lovers may be in for a treat this winter. NBC4’s chief meteorologist Doug Kammerer predicts that the DC metro area will get over a foot of snow, and areas to the west could see much more of the white stuff.
Kammerer offered this regional breakdown for winter snow totals:
- In the DC metro area, expect between 13 and 20 inches
- In Fredericksburg, expect between 13 and 20 inches
- In Warrenton and Leesburg, expect between 18 and 30 inches
- Further west into Luray and Winchester, expect between 26 and 40 inches
Kammerer says skiers could also be in luck. In the mountains to our west, he’s predicting between 90 and 130 inches of total snowfall.
Snow Forecasting Factors
Storm Team4 based its forecast in part by considering El Niño weather patterns. This year, the area is in a La Niña phase. In three winters with similar La Niña numbers, the average snowfall was 22.8 inches.
The team also considered the amount of snow cover in Siberia in October. That measurement can affect how cold our area will be. Because Siberia snowfall totals were up, we could be in for a colder winter.
As for a white Christmas? Kammerer says, “While nothing is set in stone, we think there might be a better-than-average chance of snow for the holidays in 2025 — and maybe even a white Christmas.”
