This Virginia City Ranked the No. 10 Best Place to Retire in the U.S.

You might think retirement means moving south to Florida, but U.S. News & World Report says there’s a top retirement city right here in Virginia.

Out of the 250 cities U.S. News ranked as top retirement spots, Lynchburg landed at No. 10. The town of around 80,000 residents actually has a relatively low median age of 27.8. Only about 15 percent of the Lynchburg population is over age 65, which may make it seem like an unlikely pick for the retirement list.

However, U.S. News notes that Lynchburg offers a better value of living compared to similarly sized cities. The national average home value is $370,489, while the median home value in Lynchburg is $222,714. So, for retirees on a budget, Lynchburg offers a better value when comparing housing costs to median income ($60,107).

For single retirees, Lynchburg has more single people than the national average, at 67.9 percent.
