A Bright Comet May Be Visible in the Northern Virginia Skies This Week

Look up! Comet Lemmon is currently moving into view in the northern skies.

Local stargazers may be in for a treat this week. Comet Lemmon (C/2025 A6) will be closest to the Earth on Tuesday, October 21. And over the next few days, it should become easier to see in predawn hours, according the EarthSky’s website.

“Of all the comets suddenly soaring into our skies, Comet Lemmon (C/2025 A6) might be the best of the year. And this comet favors Northern Hemisphere observers,” EarthSky says. In early October, the comet “has been cutting a path underneath the giant ladle shape of the Big Dipper in Ursa Major.”

On Thursday, October 16, it will be passing near Cor Caroli, the brightest star in Canes Venatici in the Hunting Dogs constellation. Some estimates say it will be possible to see the comet at this stage with the naked eye.

“Keep in mind, comets are notoriously unpredictable. But there’s a good chance you might be able to find the comet with your eyes alone from a dark-sky site,” EarthSky says.

Your best bet for catching a glimpse of Comet Lemmon is at a dark area looking toward the western horizon in the early hours of the morning until before sunrise. Find a spot with no obstructions like trees, towers, or buildings.

The comet was only discovered earlier this year by astronomers using a telescope at Mt. Lemmon, Arizona. According to NASA, it’s the third comet currently visible with binoculars and on long camera exposures.
