By Jon Simkins November 18, 2022 at 12:31 pm

A car passenger died Thursday night after the vehicle they were riding in crashed into the Potomac River.

The vehicle was heading northbound on the George Washington Memorial Parkway at approximately 9:30 p.m. when it crashed in the vicinity of the Humpback Bridge, authorities from Arlington County Fire said.

Rescue personnel pulled the deceased adult, who has not yet been identified, from the car shortly after the accident. The driver of the vehicle was transported to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to a U.S. Park Police spokesperson. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rescue crews initially responded to a call for three people submerged in the river, according to an ABC7 report. Once removed from the vehicle, the driver confirmed there was just one other passenger.

Elements from Alexandria Fire, Arlington Fire, D.C. Fire, U.S. Park Police, and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Fire Department all assisted in the rescue, according to reports.

The crash remains under investigation.
