Higher education just became more accessible for Northern Virginians working in the senior living and health care industries. Announced on July 21, Goodwin House Incorporated, which has two life plan communities in Alexandria and Falls Church, is partnering with University of Maryland Global Campus to establish a new education alliance to expand the affordability of college degrees for nearly 1,000 senior living and health care employees in Northern Virginia.

The partnership brings together UMGC’s online degree programs (with a commitment to low-cost, accessible higher education) and Goodwin House Incorporated’s commitment to expand support for staff who want to grow their skill sets.

This is UMGC’s first alliance with a senior living and health care organization, and the agreement will enable employees who work for Goodwin House Incorporated (and their spouses and dependents) to waive the university’s application fee, as well as take classes at discounted tuition rates.

The program features more than 90 undergraduate and graduate classes or certificate programs, all of which are available online. The program also includes cost savings for digital resources that can replace costly publisher textbooks.

“We are pleased to establish this educational alliance with an organization whose mission is to support and uplift the lives of older adults,” said Blakely Pomietto, UMGC’s senior vice president and chief academic officer, in a recent press release. “Our own public mission has always focused on supporting and uplifting adult students who are often juggling full-time employment and families as they try to gain job-relevant skills and increase their value in the workforce.”
