Virginia reports first coronavirus death; Northam bans events with 100-plus attendees

Northern Virginia’s daily update on COVID-19 and how it’s impacting the region.

Local
Local counties are helping school-aged children across the region get free meals during school closures. Children are not required to be enrolled in the free or reduced lunch program, and family meal kits are available in some counties. (Inside NoVA)

Local
WMATA has moved to reduce Metro and bus service across the region, with trains operating every 12 minutes. Train stations will open at 5 a.m., and weekend services will remain the same. (NBC4)

Regional
As of March 14, Virginia has reported its first death from COVID-19, the novel coronavirus. The patient was a male in his 70s being treated in the Peninsula Health District (which includes Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, James City County and York County), who acquired the virus from an unknown source, and eventually passed from respiratory failure as a result of COVID-19. Regional
Governor Ralph Northam announced on March 15 that any gathering over 100 people would now be banned in Virginia. At the time of the announcement, Virginia had 45 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with the most reported as 10 cases in Fairfax County. (Inside NoVA)
