Approved in December, the 230-acre park includes a large nesting area for the local great blue heron population.

Listen up Loudoun County nature lovers—Ashburn is about to get a new park.

The proposed 230-acre property was approved in December, and features a large nesting area for the great blue heron, a favorite among birders in the region.

Ron Meyer, the Broad Run supervisor of Peterson Companies (the development company of the Commonwealth Center), will be providing 70-plus acres of land, and Kincora, the future home of Children’s Science Center and the National Museum of Intelligence and Special Operations, is offering 160-plus acres of land for the park.

The park will be located between One Loudoun and the Commonwealth Center, and will boast views of the blue heron population in Northern Virginia from several angles. The species’ local presence has influenced the proposed name, Blue Heron Park.

The park land will also feature a full-size soccer field and parking lot along Loudoun County Parkway, as well as pedestrian bridges over Broad Run and Beaverdam Run, including access to One Loudoun and the Commonwealth Center.
