DC region receives failing grade for healthy air; Arlington raises property tax rate

Northern Virginia’s daily dose of local and national news for Wednesday, April 24.

The annual State of the Air report released by the American Lung Assocation ranked the Washington-Baltimore region as the 16th most ozone-polluted city in the U.S. Both Arlington and Fairfax received an “F” for the number of high ozone days that occurred between 2015 and 2017. Loudoun County and Prince William County both got “Cs.” (WTOP)

The City of Alexandria, Fairfax, Arlington and Prince William counties debuted a total of 10 purple glass recovery bins at Northern Virginia’s glass sites. As opposed to recycling used glass curbside, the receptacles ensure that glass is recycled and reused. When glass is recycled curbside (mixed with paper and plastic), it is harder to repurpose. The Arlington County Board unanimously approved a plan on Tuesday to encourage more people to use bicycles. This is the county’s first comprehensive update to the county’s Master Transportation Plan since 2008. (WTOP)
