Salmonella cases linked to hedgehogs expands to Virginia; New name for Drew Model School in Arlington

As of Friday, 17 people nationwide have been infected with a strain of salmonella that could be linked to pet hedgehogs. No one has died, but two people were hospitalized. In January, Fairfax County legalized household hedgehogs as pets, just a few days before the Center for Disease Control and Prevention issued a notice about the connection between salmonella and the animals. (The Washington Post)

The Arlington County School Board has approved a new name for Drew Model School in Nauck, deciding to rename it Dr. Charles R. Drew Elementary School. (Arlington Public Schools)

A Loudoun County eighth grader took home first place at the 2019 National GeoBee Virginia State Competition on March 29. Anish Susaria is a student at Belmont Ridge Middle School and will now compete in the national competition at the National Geographic Society headquarters in DC, from May 19 to 22. (The Loudoun Times-Mirror)
