Halal slaughterhouse wins approval in Alexandria; Gov. Northam vetoes bill for school protection officers

The Alexandria City Council voted 5 to 2 on Tuesday to approve a special-use permit for D.C. Live Poultry Market, a retail halal butcher shop that slaughters chickens on-site, and has circulated controversy in the community. (The Washington Post)

Gov. Ralph Northam vetoed a bill to create a new public-employee category called school protection officers, claiming that the bill failed to clearly define the officers’ duties and credentials. (InsideNoVA)

Fairfax’s Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a 420-unit mixed-use redevelopment project to be built in Tysons on 5.86 acres near Jones Branch and Westbranch drives. (WTOP)
