Arlington seeking to change name of Jefferson Davis Highway; Time’s Person of the Year announced

Northern Virginia’s daily dose of local and national news for Tuesday, Dec. 11.

Arlington County Board is expected to ask the General Assembly in Richmond for the authority to change the name of Jefferson Davis Highway. The county hopes that the arrival of Amazon will help spur the change, though efforts in the past were eventually denied.

Time has named a group of journalists, including Jamal Khashoggi, as the Time’s Person of the Year for 2018. All of the journalists have been jailed, or killed, for their work. The remaining honorees include Maria Ressa, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, and the Capital Gazette of Annapolis, Maryland.

A proposed policy in Stafford County would allow transgender students to use bathrooms that match with their gender identities. The policy would be the first of its kind in Virginia.

The Metro Board is expected to take a vote this week that will determine if service will continue using the current hours (until 11:30 p.m. during the week, 1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 11 p.m. on Sundays) or return to the old hours of 3 a.m. closings on Fridays and Saturdays. Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld says the reduced hours are helpful to the maintenance of the aging system.
