Fairfax County considering cutting retirement benefits for civil employees; Absentee voting up in Virginia

Fairfax County is considering cutting pension and retirement benefits for employees hired after July 1, 2019. Among the possible measures the Board of Supervisors will consider at a November meeting include raising the minimum retirement age for civilian employees, expanding the period considered for an employee’s final average compensation from three to five years, eliminating a pre-Social Security supplement and ending a 3 percent increase in retirement annuity.

Arlington County is seeing a significant increase in the number of absentee ballots already submitted for the Nov. 6 Midterm elections. According to the Virginia Public Access Project, Arlington has seen a 114 percent increase in the absentee ballots cast through Oct. 17 from last year; similar boosts have been happening all across the state.

With estimates that more than 1.2 million people could be living in the Metro-D.C. region by 2045, the National Capital Region’s Transportation Planning Board approved a blueprint for the area’s transportation future on Wednesday. Some of the plans laid out include a network of bike lanes, bus rapid transit systems, light-rail and improved roads.

Police in Prince William County are currently searching for 33-year-old Elaha Farzad, whose family reported her missing Wednesday night after receiving texts with “concerning statements” from Farzad. Police believe Farzad went missing willingly and could be driving a 2018 green or turquoise Toyota C-HR with a white top.

Prince William Board of County Supervisors has unanimously approved a special use permit for Virginia Solar to build a 20 megawatt solar farm in a rural area of Nokesville. This would be the first solar farm in Prince William County. The farm still needs to receive a state permit, but it could be operational by late 2019 or early 2020.
