Hurricane Florence, a Category 4 storm, is expected to hit southeast North Carolina on Thursday, then dump a significant amount of rain on Virginia as it moves up the coast. Old Town, Alexandria is already experiencing flooding from this past weekend’s rain, officials handing out sandbags to residents at King and Lee streets. Loudoun and other NoVA counties are currently under a flood warning.

Last week, Arlington Public Library unveiled a new logo featuring a book with an “x” on it, which many people are criticizing saying that the “x” could carry a negative connotation and mean that books are unimportant or are coming to an end.

In August, Dulles International Airport began using a facial recognition software to ensure that people are who they say they are. The system takes a photo of someone’s face, presents a pass with a green check mark or a fail with a red x, and then the image is deleted.

Wednesday, Tim Cotman, an English teacher at Arlington’s Jefferson Middle School, was named Northern Virginia’s (Region 4) “Teacher of the Year” by Virginia Secretary of Education Atif Qarni. Cotman was unable to attend a celebration assembly held that same day as his wife had given birth to their daughter earlier that morning.
