Old newspaper starring info about female suffrage found in old home
During the demolition of a dilapidated home, a newspaper dated July 18, 1917, was discovered. The paper contained information about women who were arrested and thrown into a Lorton prison, now the Workhouse Arts Center, for pursuing female suffrage.
Stafford to receive new park come September
By the end of September, Stafford County should welcome Widewater State Park, a 1,110-acre space where Capt. John Smith once walked, and which will eventually host educational and recreational opportunities. Construction at the park, located between the Potomac River and Aquia Creek, cost $43 million and is broken up into three phases, the first of which will be complete upon opening.
Riverbend Park to purchase new canoes
Through a $3,000 Mastenbrook Volunteer Matching Fund Grant, the Friends of Riverbend Park will be replacing 10 worn-out canoes whose use brought in $56,000 in revenue since their 2010 purchase.
Maintenance underway at Ben Brenman Park
Through the end of the month, Ben Brenman Park will see maintenance work that includes trimming trees and other vegetation; tending to water bubblers, fountains and ponds; fixing furniture; and improving court and athletic field surfaces. Should trees need to be removed, they will be replaced this coming fall.
National Park Service dedicates funds to preserve Virginia battlefields
In July, the National Park Service preserved more than 200 acres of Virginia battlefields by purchasing 2.25 acres of Winchester’s Opequon battlefield for $910,500; 166 acres of Prince William’s Second Manassas battlefield for $519,515; an .85-acre area that hosted the Second Battle of Rappahannock Station for $240,306; and 12.5 acres belonging to the Trevilian Station battlefield for $47,751.
Public meeting scheduled to discuss Potomac Nationals’ stadium proposal
A public meeting during which attendees can weigh in on Potomac Baseball LLC’s $35 million, 5,000-seat Celebrate Virginia South stadium will be held on Sept. 5 at 7 p.m at Fredericksburg’s Dorothy Hart Community Center. Pending approval, opening day would be in April of 2020.
Arlington County Board looking for input on Park Master Plan and Area Plan
Through Aug. 20, the Arlington County Board is accepting input on the county’s Park Master Plan and Area Plan, specifically updates to Jennie Dean Park, pedestrian and cyclist accessibility, how to promote the arts in the area, stormwater management, adding a new “gateway” to South Four Mile Run Drive and more.
Extra money goes toward improving Vienna’s Meadow Lane Park
With money leftover from paving a parking lot at the Vienna Dog Park, the Vienna Town Council will pay $31,274.50 for American Tennis Courts Inc. to fix the courts at Meadow Lane Park. The basketball court and running track will also see improvements.
