NoVA schoolteacher’s infection-related death reveals leaks in MedStar Washington Hospital Center; I-66 construction to start soon

Carol Leonard, a 70-year-old retired Northern Virginia schoolteacher, passed away after acquiring an infection following thyroid surgery at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Arlington attorney Scott M. Perry made the argument that the hospital did not tell Leonard about the sewage and water leaks in the hospital’s basement operating rooms, and that because she was prone to infections, she should have been given antibiotics before surgery.

This week, the Virginia Department of Transportation should announce an official start date for the I-66 construction spanning the Capital Beltway to Gainesville, though some say that work, which will take approximately four years to complete, could begin this weekend.

Chris Gettings, a father from Falls Church, is asking that individuals with information about who owns the dog that bit his 11-year-old son come forward. Gettings is trying to locate the dog’s owner so that his son does not have to receive rabies shots on Wednesday.

Of the state’s 843 traffic deaths last year, 248 were caused by drunk driving and at least 208 from distracted driving, prompting people from the Virginia DMV to partner with officials from homeland security to prevent the growth of what the Virginia Deputy Transportation Secretary is calling a distracted driving “epidemic.”

A woman was nearly abducted in Arlington’s 600 block of N. Oxford Street at 2:32 p.m. on Sunday. April 1. A black male driving a “beat-up” pick-up truck called out to the woman, and after she ignored him, the man pulled her from behind toward his vehicle. The woman was able to run away and did not need medical treatment.

William Ashton III, Herndon’s Town Manager, has proposed a budget increase for 2019 of 18 percent, totaling $60.2 million. The increase would work to fund redevelopment in downtown Herndon as well as water and sewer.

A fire spanning 45 acres of Manassas Battlefield Park will take place sometime between April 3-13, weather permitting. The prescribed fire will improve the health and appearance of the area’s native grasses.
