Today is Martin Luther King Day; Alexandria’s St. Mary’s Catholic Church becomes a basilica

St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alexandria will now be called “The Basilica of St. Mary,” making it the United States’ 84th “minor basilica.” The 223-year-old church is the second Washington, D.C., area basilica, the first being the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the largest Catholic church in the country.
