Muhammad Bayazid, a Reston filmmaker and human rights activist working on a film about Syria, was stabbed in an apparent assassination attempt in Instanbul. His wife, Samah Safi Bayazid, has said that he is alive, improving and that she hopes that he can leave the Instanbul hospital to return back to the United States shortly. The trailer for Bayazid’s film was well received in Instanbul, but enraged Syrian supporters.

Nabra Hassanen, who was a 17-year-old sophomore at South Lakes High School, was murdered in Reston this past summer after attending an All Dulles Area Muslim Society Ramadan service. The 22-year-old murder suspect, Darwin Martinez Torres, will have a preliminary hearing at the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court on Friday, Oct. 13. Torres allegedly carried a baseball bat and approached the group of teenagers with whom Hassanen was traveling. Hassanen was hit, put in a vehicle, and her body was found in a Sterling pond later that day.
