On Wednesday, Oct. 4, over 160 Northern Virginia schools will participate in International Walk to School Day alongside schools from 40 other countries around the world. Coordinated by The National Center for Safe Routes to School, this annual event calls attention to pedestrian injuries and fatalities. The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles reports that Northern Virginia saw 37 fatalities and more than 600 injuries last year.

The man who shot and killed at least 59 people at the Las Vegas country music festival on Sunday (injuring over 500 others), reportedly smuggled over 23 firearms into his 32nd-floor Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino room. One of the weapons used was an AK-47-type rifle. A woman from West Virginia was killed and a 27-year-old alumna of Anne Arundel High School is in a coma after getting shot in the eye.

The Stafford County flagpole that bears a Confederate flag was vandalized sometime between Sept. 24 and Oct. 1. Hubert Cash, who owns the land that the flagpole sits on, reported that “take it down” and “racist” were spray painted at the pole’s base, that the rope had been damaged and that the “Virginia” plaque looked like it had been tampered with. The flagpole, which is owned by the Virginia Flaggers organization, has been the center of local debate since August’s Unite the Right protest in Charlottesville.
