Last May, the Fauquier County School Board asked administrators to take a second look at the schools’ policy to provide cold cheese sandwiches and milk “substitute meals” to students with unpaid lunch balances. The new policy, which will go into effect mid-year if it passes at the board’s October meeting, would allow students to charge meals (hot entrees included) and require staff members to call the child’s parents to discuss payment problems.

Prince William County students got free breakfast Friday, Sept. 29, in an attempt to remind families about the importance of “healthy fuel for learning.” According to a press release, 56,000 lunches are served each day at the county’s 95 schools, but less than half of their students eat the schools’ breakfast.
