Why move to the D.C. area for the co-anchor job?

I have family in the area; my sister lives here working for CNN. It’s a nighttime position, and I get to sleep in, which I’m so thrilled about because for four years I’ve woken up at 2 a.m. [at WRAL-TV and WRAZ-TV in North Carolina]. WJLA has a strong journalistic station, and the 4 o’clock spot is a huge position that has opened up. Those don’t come around a lot, especially in a market of that size.

It seems like journalism runs in your family.

Yeah. It’s a coincidence. When [my sister and I] were younger, we didn’t set out thinking this would be the big plan, but I studied journalism at Syracuse, and my sister ended up doing her master’s there. We had a one-year overlap. We actually worked together in Albany at the same station. We always said it would be cool if we ended up in the same city and gave that a try again. Lo and behold, 2016 seems like it’s going to be our year.

Any pressing stories you want to jump into?

I’m coming on at a really exciting time, and this is going to be a huge year for the region and the country. There is so much at stake, and the decisions these voters will make have significant consequences in terms of the direction our country goes in. So politics is going to dominate 2016, and I look forward to being at the heart of it all in terms of covering it.

Quick Hits

Neighborhood: Arlington

Areas you want to explore more: The dog park in Shirlington. I have a Maltese, and he is full of energy. I thought it would wear off around 3, but he is going on 5 and still has that puppy energy. I love to eat, so exploring restaurants. And I’ve got to stay in shape, so jogging down all the trails.

Last good book you read: Lean In

What you’re binge-watching: Scandal

Favorite type of food: Jamaican

Song on replay right now: The new Justin Bieber song. (I know it’s corny.)
