Kinrose Creamery delivers Persian ice cream around NoVA

The family behind Amoo’s restaurant is sharing one of their most popular dishes with the region.

The Oveysi family has run Amoo’s Restaurant in McLean for 15 years. “Sebastian is the face of it,” says Maria Oveysi. “Kinrose, we call it our sister brand. It’s really led by the sister, which is me.”

Kinrose Creamery officially launched last week, but Maria Oveysi says that the ice cream that her mother, Susie, makes has long been one of the family’s most favored recipes. “Anybody that has had it, everybody has made some amazing remark about it,” she says. It was only natural, then, that the dessert should find a wider audience.

What’s so special about it? Persian ice cream, also known as bastani, is made with saffron, hence the yellow color apparent above. It’s also flavored with rose and pistachio for a floral, nutty bite that’s as indulgent as it is refreshing on hot days like NoVA is currently experiencing.

Maria Oveysi says that in the past week, her first operating Kinrose, she has sold north of 150 pints. That includes ice cream picked up at Amoo’s as well as at delivery sites in Sterling, Manassas, and Vienna. In the near future, she plans to add Leesburg and DC to the spots where customers can grab a pint they’ve ordered on Instagram and paid for through Venmo. Maria Oveysi says that she’s at work on a website for her business, which will make ordering easier.

Due to COVID-related supply chain issues, “one-man show” Maria Oveysi is making the pints herself while she waits for the ones she ordered to arrive. “When our actual pints arrive, we can get into stores,” she says. “Hopefully in the future, we’ll be in some boutique gourmet stores.”

Until then, follow Kinrose Creamery on Instagram to see days for a mass delivery near you (or order for pick-up the next day at Amoo’s) and place your request for the treat you deserve this summer. 6271 Old Dominion Dr., McLean
