Italian-food purists may be shocked to see one controversial item on the menu at Stellina Pizzeria Monday: pineapple pizza. The “very authentically Italian” team added this problematic pie in honor of April Fools’ Day.
The specialty pizza, available only on April 1, features pineapple brûlée, shredded mozzarella, Calabrian pepper, and spicy salami. It costs $20.
A recent culinary scandal inspired the team, led by chef Matteo Venini. Respected Italian pizza maker Gino Sorbillo placed pineapple on a pizza, sparking discussion about the strict culinary guidelines that guide Italian food.
Even outside of Italy, pineapple on pizza certainly creates divisive debate. Earlier this year, we polled readers to gauge where they stood on certain controversial pizza practices. When it came to pineapple pizza, readers remained pretty divided — 47 percent said they liked the topping and 53 percent said no.
Whatever you think about the toppings, grab a bite to eat at Stellina. The pizzeria ranked among Northern Virginia Magazine‘s 18 best places to get pizza, notably for its 72-hour fermented crusts.
