A Falls Church Restaurant and a Pair of NoVA Chefs Are James Beard Award Semifinalists

2941 is up for Outstanding Restaurant while the chef duo at Joon in Vienna is nominated for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic

The fine-dining restaurant 2941, located in Falls Church, is an Outstanding Restaurant semifinalist, the James Beard Foundation announced Wednesday.

2941 ranked No. 1 on Northern Virginia Magazine’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023 list. Our critic called it “a delicious marriage of nature and art.”

Najmieh Batmanglij and Christopher Morgan, who opened the Persian restaurant Joon in Vienna in June, are semifinalists in the Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic category. Morgan grew up in McLean and received a Michelin Star at Maydan in DC, collaborated with his “second mother” and famed cookbook author Batmanglij at Joon. “Joon is part of the new guard of Tysons and Falls Church restaurants from Michelin-proven DC talent that is elevating NoVA’s dining scene. But Batmanglij is Joon’s X-factor,” our food critic wrote in an October review of Joon.

Yuan Tang is a semifinalist in the Best Chef category for his work at Rooster + Owl in DC. Tang and his wife, Carey, also co-own Ellie Bird in Falls Church, which opened in 2023 and earned the No. 5 spot on our 50 Best Restaurants list.

The finalists for the prestigious James Beard Awards will be announced April 3 at the Waldorf Astoria Washington DC. The winners will be announced in June.
