4 unique beers from NoVA breweries to try

Brewers have sudsy fun with these monikers cleverly inspired by intergalactic oddities, breakfast cereals and more.

Looking for a brew, unique brew to add to your beer repertoire? Here are four local suds to try.

Oceanus Procellarum (G34.4 Brewing Company)

This coffee stout also happens to be the largest dark patch on Earth’s moon, covering more than 10% of the satellite’s surface. “Our goal is not only to provide great beer, but to have people look up the names to get the reference and learn something about space in the process,” says co-founder Tom Donovan.

Angry Angry Alice / Helleanor (Rocket Frog Brewing Company)

The IPA and lager are named for the daughters of President and Founder David Hartogs and his wife (and founding partner), Jennifer. “My daughters can be a bit competitive when I’m drinking the other’s beer,” David says. “We have fun with it.”

Man Eating Toaster (Aslin Beer Company)

“It’s fun to see a customer’s reaction to a beer that looks like a hazy New England-style IPA [but] tastes like Cinnamon Toast Crunch,” says co-founder Andrew Kelley. It’s just one of the prolific brewery’s more than 400 unique, innovative recipes.

The Death of Civilization in Slow Motion (Adroit Theory Brewing Company)

“This was a five-part series of Hazy Imperial IPAs we did with post-apocalyptic artwork in the Mad Max sense of the word,” says owner Mark Osborne, who adds that it fits well into a COVID-19 world.
