The Proposal (as told by Adam Vicks):
Anyone who knows Jessica knows two things about her: She has a tight-knit family and loves surprises. So, when I decided to propose, I knew I had to incorporate both elements. This was especially important to me since we had already found her ring together while out window shopping. I settled on popping the question during my birthday trip to Savannah, Georgia, because I knew it would be the furthest thing from Jessica’s mind. I also knew the last thing she’d expect to find down there would be our loved ones.
Saturday, April 16, was the first full day of sunshine in Savannah. I planned an entire day’s worth of activities to keep us busy and mostly indoors, allowing guests to sneak in town with ease. I told Jessica I purchased tickets to a spring gala on the riverfront, and we needed to get dressed up. I then arranged for a horse-drawn carriage to pick us up at our bed and breakfast and take us on a short tour around the Historic District that ends at Whitefield Square.
The carriage approached the square at just past 7 p.m. Jessica was so drawn to the violinist playing under the gazebo that she barely noticed a group of people sitting on park benches whose faces were hidden behind colorful parasols. I led her up to the gazebo which was covered in rose petals, and as we hit the landing, the parasols went up, and to Jessica’s astonishment, it was both our families. Jessica’s grandmother motioned for a hug while I stayed under the gazebo and pulled out the ring. When Jessica turned back around, she found me on bended knee and immediately burst into tears.
Fortunately, she said yes, but that’s not how the story ends. I told Jessica I made reservations at a restaurant on the riverfront, so everyone rushed over to Vic’s on the River, which was specifically selected because its name sounds like my last name. I led Jessica through the French doors of a private room overlooking the river, and that’s where she was surprised yet again by a dozen more friends and relatives who came down to celebrate. We capped the night off dancing the night away on a Savannah riverboat moonlight cruise.
