It’s not unusual for alumnae to offer financial support to their alma maters. But one alumna of The Madeira School, a private girls’ school in McLean, has given back in a big way.
The preparatory and boarding school announced yesterday that it received a $60 million donation from an anonymous alumna. The amount is largest in the school’s history — and the largest ever gifted to an independent girls’ school in the U.S.
“This transformational contribution represents a profound commitment to girls’ education and Madeira’s mission to prepare young women to become leaders and changemakers,” Christina Kyong, head of school at Madeira, stated on the school’s website. “This gift is a powerful recognition of the impact the school has had on the donor’s life and the lives of countless young women. We are deeply moved by her immense confidence in Madeira’s leadership and our vision to educate students for generations to come.”
The donor requested the gift be invested for at least five years as part of the school’s endowment. The money can then be used to support strategic priorities and educational programs.
Founded in 1906, The Madeira School is located on a 376-acre campus and enrolls 388 students in grades 9-12.
