As back to school season ramps up this month, get inspired as your little ones head back to the classroom by expanding your own mind. From learning about historic leaders of the American revolution to Virginia’s history of bees, these are the educational events to join in August.

Unlocking Portugal’s Wine Secrets

August 13, 6-8 p.m.

Day dream you are on the coast of Portugal with the help of this tasting class. Wine lovers will be able to explore the wine culture while tasting the different flavor profiles offered throughout the different regions in the European country. $65-$75

Virtual Afternoon Tea: Brush Up Your British

August 15, 2-3 p.m.

Although the colonists came from Britain, they quickly created their own culture. As you sip on delicious British tea, explore the manners, cultural, and linguistic differences that developed between the now allies.  Green Spring Gardens and Horticultural Center: 4603 Green Spring Rd., Alexandria; $12-$24

The Valley Forge Winter: Remembering the Man Who Made a Difference

August 16, 6:30-8 p.m.

We’ve all heard the stories of the Continental Army surviving that harsh winter in Pennsylvania, but you’ve probably never heard it from Baron Friedrich von Steuben’s perspective. Hired to train the soldiers during that winter, see how he made a difference during the Revolution and the role foreign soldiers played while fighting for the country’s freedom. $25-$30

Hands on History

August 21, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

This historic Carlyle House has gone through its fair share of owners over its 250 year history. And with that change comes design alterations. August 26, 7 p.m.

Book Signing: “Virginia Honey: A Sweet History”

August 28, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Honeybees have played an important role in the state since colonists landed in Jamestown. Join local author Virginia Johnson to learn about the state’s rich bee history. Native American Campfire at Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre

August 28, 6:30 p.m.

As you enjoy a nice bonfire under the summer sky, take some time to learn about the Native Americans that used to call Prince William home. Roast marshmallows and hear stories of the natives, examine artifacts, and learn the games the children used to play almost 400 years ago.
