7 Family-Friendly Activities Happening This Weekend, Perfect for Summer Weather

Get in a quick trip to the drive-in, county fair, or farm before summer ends and school starts.

By Michele Kettner August 11, 2021 at 10:47 am

With the return to school around the corner, carefree summer days are limited. So, before the sun sets on your summer fun, enjoy a weekend of carnival rides, fishing, and drive-in movies with the family.

Junior Club Championship

Friday, 8 a.m.
Calling all junior golfers: Now’s the time to show off your skills. This 18-hole tournament is open to all children ages 7 to 17. Special prizes will be awarded to those closest to the pin and golfers with the overall lowest gross. Burke Lake Golf Center: 6915 Ox Rd., Fairfax Station; $25

2021 Prince William County Fair

Friday through August 21, times vary
Before school is back in session, make time for one more summer memory. With something for everyone, the fair will feature classic carnival rides, a demolition derby, petting zoo, wine tastings, and much more. Prince William County Fairgrounds: 10624 Dumfries Rd., Manassas; $4-$12

A League of Their Own

Saturday, 8 p.m.
Batter up! Pack the car for a summer showing of A League of Their Own at the Columbia Pike Drive-In Movie Nights. Enjoy a night in the 1940s as the all-female baseball league takes the country by storm. Arlington Career Center: 816 S. Walter Reed Dr., Arlington; free

Kids Fishing Clinic

Saturday, 9-11 a.m.
It’s never too late to teach your kids how to fish. Wake up early to join the park rangers for a morning on the water. Kiddos will be learning how to tie a knot, bait their hooks, and cast their rods in hope of pulling in their own fishy find. Widewater State Park: 101 Widewater State Park Rd., Stafford; free

The Big Dig Potato Harvest

Saturday & Sunday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Grab your shovels and buckets because potato season is here. Bring along the whole family for the annual harvest at Great Country Farms. Once you are done digging up enough food for the family, enjoy live music, delicious treats, and the kids’ play area. Great Country Farms: 34345 Snickersville Turnpike, Bluemont; $10-$12

13th Annual Duck Splash

Sunday, 11 a.m.
This summer race is like no other. Rubber ducks are taking over Occoquan as the annual duck splash heads to the river. Just adopt a duck and cheer it on to the finish line. Prizes range from $20 to $500 depending on the placing of your duck. 314 Mill St., Occoquan; $5 per duck

When Life Gives You Lemons

Sunday, 1 p.m.
On a hot summer day, there’s nothing that beats a cold glass of lemonade. Head over to the park to learn how to make the refreshing drink, and get in a quick history lesson on lemonade and how people throughout history chilled their drinks during the dog days of summer. Ellanor C. Lawrence Park: 5040 Walney Rd., Chantilly; $8
