Crashes on Interstate 66 happen all the time, but what happened Monday afternoon was not your typical highway bumper thumper. A dump truck with its trailer upright struck an overhead support beam in Chantilly at the southbound ramp to the Fairfax County Parkway.
The trailer broke off and landed in the travel lanes of westbound I-66 around 3:30 p.m.
The Virginia Department of Transportation reposted a one-minute video from ABC7’s Scott Thuman on the social media platform X. Amir Jaffery’s Tesla recorded the footage. He was one lane over from the truck and behind it.
Pro Tip: Don’t do this to our bridges.

In sharing the video, VDOT said, “Don’t do this to our bridges.”
No vehicles or people were hurt as the trailer crashed onto the left lane of westbound I-66 and the right lane of the Express Lanes, forcing the closure of two left lanes on the main line.
Jaffery told ABC7 the experience was terrifying. “I was thinking about, you know, what if somebody was right under the bridge, and didn’t see that guy, what he’s doing, and if the whole bed was dropped on on top of that?”
