Alexandria will get 234 new rental apartments, including some considered affordable housing, now that Carr Properties has purchased 901 N. Pitt St. in Old Town.
The vacant office building that’s at that location will be torn down, and in its place, Carr Properties will build an eight-story, 250,000-square-foot multi-family property.
Carr expects to break ground this fall. The project should be completed by late 2026.
The new property will be home to apartments that range from studio units to three bedrooms. One-third of the units will have views of the Potomac River. The building will have an outdoor pool and lounge area.
The redevelopment adjacent to Montgomery Park will have a 6,445-square-foot performing arts venue that CityDance, a Washington, DC nonprofit dance institution, plans to lease.
The property will have 7,000 square feet of store space on the ground floor, below-grade parking, and 15,800 square feet of outdoor space.
This venture by the real estate investment trust that’s known for developing commercial properties is part of a strategic expansion of the firm.

“Old Town is a highly sought after market in the DC-area, characterized by its exceptional walkability, historic neighborhood character, vibrant restaurant scene, and proximity to desirable business and entertainment hubs,” Carr said.
Carr’s first residential project, The Elm, is an award-winning, two-tower luxury apartment building in Bethesda, Maryland.
SK+I Architecture and interior design firm Edit Lab by Streetsense will work on the Pitt Street property that will be designed to follow industry-leading sustainability measures and achieve LEED Silver certification.
