For many kids, entering day care or preschool is their first opportunity to connect with peers and make friends. It’s a fun time for little ones, and it’s also an important developmental step.

“The early years are a critical window for social-emotional development. When a young child shares a toy, waits their turn, or comforts a crying friend, they’re building the emotional foundation for empathy, communication, and resilience — skills that matter far more in the long run than knowing letters or numbers,” says Renee Williams, operations director of Beth Emeth Early Childhood Center in Herndon.

At BEECC, she says, “friendship-building is woven into the rhythm of the day,” with teachers helping nurture children’s friendships. Plus, she says, “children get unstructured time to choose who they play with and how, which is where genuine friendships take root.”

At home, Williams says, parents can encourage friendships by setting up playdates so that friendships can grow one-on-one. “And resist the urge to smooth over every small conflict. Minor friction with a peer is often where real social learning happens,” Williams says. “Trust that your child’s teachers are watching these dynamics closely too, and don’t hesitate to ask them what they’re noticing.”
