Wolf Trap Has Added a Third Historic Barn to Its Property

The new building adds 2,500 square feet of space for pre-show dining, post-show gatherings, special events, and private rentals.

The Barns at Wolf Trap is expanding. A third restored historic structure — named the Virginian Barn — will open in November.

The Virginian Barn adds approximately 2,500 square feet of flexible space. It’s designed to host pre-show dining, post-show gatherings, special events, and private rentals. It also includes expanded restrooms, upgraded kitchen facilities, and additional storage.

Historic Virginian Barn

Constructed in the early 1900s, the barn was located on River Farm in Loudoun County. It was home to longtime Wolf Trap donors Karen and Fred Schaufeld.

When plans to widen Route 15 in 2025 threatened the future of the building, the Schaufelds offered to donate the barn to Wolf Trap. This spring, it was carefully disassembled, reconditioned, and reconstructed on the property.

“We are so pleased that this remarkable historic structure will live on in a meaningful way. Wolf Trap is the perfect home for the Virginian [Barn] because it shares our appreciation for preservation, community, and bringing people together. We are honored to see this barn begin its next chapter as part of such a vibrant venue,” Karen and Fred Schaufeld said in a statement.

The Virginian Barn joins the Scottish (circa 1791 to 1792) and German (circa 1725) Barns on the Wolf Trap property.

“The Barns at Wolf Trap has long offered audiences an intimate connection to world-class artists in a setting unlike any other. The addition of the Virginian Barn allows us to build on that legacy by creating more opportunities for our patrons to gather, celebrate, and connect before and after performances while preserving the historic character that makes this place so special,” said Arvind Manocha, president and CEO of Wolf Trap Foundation.
