These Northern Virginia Spots Will Help You Pack the Perfect Picnic

Find delicious food and snacks for your outdoor adventure.

By Priya Konings April 18, 2025 at 6:00 am

Now that the temperatures are finally rising, you can start planning a picnic, hike, bike ride, or boat excursion. Virginia is home to no less than 22 national parks, so there are ample locations for outdoor enjoyment. And food is an important element of any fun activity.

So whether you are looking for sustenance while on an arduous hike or want to plan a leisurely picnic as a gathering for friends or family, you will need to think about what to pack. We have recommendations for the places to get just the right picnic goods for your adventure, whether that entails a casual cold sandwich lunch or a gourmet picnic basket. Scroll down for all our suggestions—and then get out there!

Graze Craze

Want a gourmet picnic but are overwhelmed at the prospect of putting one together yourself? Head over to the Graze Craze, where you can pick up a pre-made picnic box, which comes filled with a variety of cheeses, artisan crackers, fresh bread, seasonal fruit and vegetables, dips, and spreads. The boxes come in two sizes: one that feeds two, and one for four. And Graze Craze offers choices such like vegetarian, protein-forward, or with sweets like brownies and cookies. Just remember to place your picnic box order online in advance. 1121 19th St. N., Arlington

Poppyseed Rye

For upscale picnic fare, consider visiting Poppyseed Rye, where the sandwiches are called “handhelds,” and include creations like burrata, tomato, and pesto on ciabatta, a roasted vegetable panini, and a crunchy, fresh tofu bahn mi. Be sure to also grab a few homemade strawberry basil lemonades to pair with your handhelds.  818 N. Quincy St., Ste. 102, Arlington

Slaters Market

Not only can you get all the picnic goods you need at Slaters, but you can also rent a picnic basket for $5 for the day. The team at Slater’s will help you pack your basket with items like the avocado caprese sandwich, which adds avocado to a classic mozzarella and tomato sandwich, and the summer berry salad, with greens, goat cheese, and fresh strawberries. They also have cheese and bread, chips, and a variety of sodas to stow away in your picnic basket as well. 1552 Potomac Greens Dr., Alexandria

The Swiss Bakery

For picnic goods that deviate slightly from the typical American fare, visit the Swiss Bakery. This charming venue offers a hot breakfast and lunch but also has a grab-and-go section where you can pick up some tasty goods for your picnic. Choose from items like a cheesy quiche, complete with a flaky and buttery crust, hearty meat or cheese sandwiches on fresh baguette, and sweet treats like jam-filled cookies and macaroons. 5224 Port Royal Rd., Springfield

West Main Market

Conveniently located in Luray, in Shenandoah Valley, this spot has a whole menu of traditional cold sandwiches and sides that are great for a casual picnic lunch for the whole family. From a classic egg salad sandwich to a veggie wrap stuffed with spinach, red bell pepper, cucumber, mushrooms, and a bright tomato jam, there is something for everyone. Be sure to also pack some of their side dishes, which include creamy coleslaw, macaroni salad, and potato salad. 123 W. Main St., Luray
