Today is a big day for two of Virginia’s most prominent universities. And a big day for higher education offerings in Northern Virginia. Both UVA and Viriginia Tech are celebrating the grand opening of their new, state-of-the-art NoVA campuses.
Virginia Tech’s Campus
Today is the grand opening of Virginia Tech’s Innovation Campus in Alexandria. Academic Building One is an 11-story, 300,000-square foot facility operating as a state-of-the-art hub for computer science and computer engineering. The 3.5-acre campus is located near the new Potomac Yard-VT Metro station. It also features a cyber-physical lab and two-story drone testing cage.
“There are research facilities, the new classrooms are amazing and are really high-tech. … This is just a very large moment for the Innovation Campus,” says Lance Collins, Innovation Campus vice president and executive director.
Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin will be in attendance at the grand-opening event, which will feature keynote speaker Regina Dugan, president and CEO of Wellcome Leap and two-time Virginia Tech alumna, government officials, and university leaders.
UVA’s Campus
UVA is also holding a grand opening celebration of its Fairfax Campus, the first all-UVA satellite campus in Northern Virginia. The new campus covers two floors in the Inova Center for Personalized Health complex.
The 55,000-square-foot facility offers programs from nine of the university’s 12 schools. Julie Sara Boyd, executive director of UVA Northern Virginia, says the goal is to “bring UVA education and excellence to the Northern Virginia area, and connect the learners and organizations up here with all 12 schools.”
Today’s unveiling will also feature remarks from Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, UVA President Jim Ryan and UVA Northern Virginia Dean Greg Fairchild.
