Celebrate the Winter Solstice 4 Ways in Northern Virginia

Welcome in winter with time spent surrounded by trees, practicing meditation, or with a music festival.

By Maggie Roth December 16, 2024 at 10:48 am

December 21 is the winter solstice, marking both the first day of winter and the shortest day of the year. It’s a key time to connect with yourself and with nature and to appreciate the changing of the seasons. To help you do just that, here are four ways to celebrate the solstice this year.

Winter Solstice Forest Bathing: Finding Peace and Belonging with Nature

December 21, 10 a.m.–noon

Forest bathing is the process of “immersing ourselves in the natural world through our senses,” according to the event description for this outing at the Winkler Botanical Preserve. With a guided experience, guests will learn to tune into their senses and reconnect with nature to reduce stress. It’s a combination of guided meditation, slow walking, individual and group activities, and the drinking of locally sourced tea. Winkler Botanical Preserve: 5400 Roanoke Ave., Alexandria, $35

Winter Solstice Hike, Ni River Trail

December 21, 6 p.m.

In Fredericksburg, there will be a nighttime guided hike along the Ni River Trail. With master naturalists to guide you along the way, this natural experience is a fun way to welcome in the new season. Be sure to bring a flashlight and wear sturdy shoes. Salamander Loop of Ni River Trail: 8110 River Stone Dr., Fredericksburg

Singing to the Moon: Winter Solstice Festival

December 21, 5 p.m.

Earp’s Ordinary will host a day of performances by artists including Marcy Cochran, Florencia & The Feeling, Jillian Matundan, and more. In addition to being a celebration of the solstice, the event is also an album release party for Matundan, whose debut album Singing to the Moon came out earlier in 2024. Earp’s Ordinary: 10420 Main St., Fairfax, $30

Winter Solstice Celebration

December 22, 10:30 a.m.–noon

The Skin & Wellness Centre day spa in Falls Church will host an event that aims to renew and rejuvenate visitors for the start of the new season. In the spa’s salt cave, guests will take part in guided movement, breathwork, and meditation. Skin and Wellness Centre: 929 W. Broad St., Falls Church, $30
